Sunset Colors - II

Even though there are plenty of sunset photos on the website, each sunset has it's own charm and colors... I never get tired of watching sunsets.

yet another sunset?

Today we had a great sunset, with interesting clouds, but the photos of it just look like yet another sunset, so I decided to see what photoshop could do to it. I slightly increased contrast, reduced brightness, then used unsharp mask in a way that I'm sure wasn't intended, pushing it away from realism. I then used NeatImage to smooth out the noise. End product - abstract sunset?

Sunset Master at work

Jeppe is a TE and TL (Jep) friend. He is one of the TE photographers whom I respect the most for his sunset shots. His landscape shots of his country are also spectacular. Before I flew to Copenhagen, I emailed him and I was very glad he was available to meet up with me despite our tour's tight itinerary. We met up in Frederikshavn and he reserved me a front seat in his car (where he drove some kilometers along with his family) to treat me out for dinner at the northernmost part of Denmark, Skagen.

We waited for the sunset which came at around 10 pm. It was awesome to see Jeppe at work. I did learn a lot from him. He drove me back to my hotel at around 11 pm. It was a short meeting but a priceless one. To Jeppe and his family, thank you so much.

P.S. I learned from Jeppe that that day was the only sunset experienced by Denmark for quite sometime. We were indeed lucky.

Sunset #14784

Taken about 50 metres back from my last sunset at the same time. I was trying out my new lens at the wide setting.

My favourite feature in this photo is the cloud formation.

I made a few adjustment layers for the ground and sky in this one, to try to get the balance right. To finish I did a gradient fill layer and set it to overlay mode, then masked off the ground, just to get the deeper blue colour from the sky.

Here in NZ the sunlight is very strong right until sunset. I've seen sunsets in other parts of the world where you can look straight at the sun without blinding yourself. Not here! I guess it's because we are relatively pollution-free, being so far from anywhere.

This poses something of a challenge for photography. The trick is to underexpose then "rescue" it in photoshop.

Mono Sunset

Mono Lake Sunset. This is one time I learned that for a sunset, don't leave right after the sunset - wait! The colors just kept changing and getting better and better as I waited. I had originally started to pack up and leave, then ended up running back for more photos. Scanned with a minolta film scanner, then sharpened in PS

Sunset in Teluk Bayur part # 2

This photo underwent HPP. The original one was taken during sunset in Teluk Bayur, but I was a bit dissapointed as the sunset did not come as expectation. I then made a heavy processed in my digital lab to get the atmosphere of sunset, as experiment. What do you think of the result ? Was it good or bad ?

Was at a school concert, the set up was quite cluttered, so decided to work on close-ups and silhouttes.....

going Home

Taken just after my last sunset photo, a couple of minutes after the sun dipped below the horizon.It was taken at a low pov, hence that distracting stairway handrail. People are going home after an afternoon on the park. I took their silhouttes as a chance.PP done are levels only.

ND Grad filter produced a gradient blue, since half of it is dark, half is light (just for info). Our cameras record all the colour data on the picture if it is well exposed. But sometimes the in-camera processing is not quite as vibrant compared to external softwares available. Simple levels will bring out hidden colours.

This was the grand ball of fire that so kindly lit my last 2 sunset shots. I really wish I had a better shot of this, but I was in a car, and moving fast. So I'm not particularly fond of the composition or how washed out the silhouttes are, but I just had to post this.. look how big that thing is!

Freedom

This was st the sunset point in Mount Abu in Rajasthan. The mother sold lemaonade while the son helped her and the daughter sold popcorn to the tourists and honeymooners collected at the sunset point. Almost as soon as the sun went down the show came to an end and the corwd walked out as though it were watching a movie which just ened. Even as I walked back witht he crowd I looked abck to have a final glimpse of this family of entrepreneurs and this is what i saw, the children were celebrating in glee as it was the end of day for them and the daughter was jumpong around even as the son hugged his mother asking her to pack up and leave quickly. Since the sky was brightly lit up I managed to get them in silhouttes and later added the sepia tone.

My Fake Sunset

Supergran loves sunsets and silhouttes. Late this afternoon, when Supergran was sitting having her cuppa tea after dinner, she glanced up at the window of the living room. There she saw a lovely rosy glow. "Ooooh" said Supergran "a wonderful sunset. Must hurry and get my camera before it sets..It is just at the rooftop level and the sky is darkening already".
She hurriedly toddles into the computer room fpr the camera, and rushes back as fast as her old legs will carry her. "Quickly" she thinks," no time to lift the blinds, poke the camera lens between and snap quickly". Click..click..there, got it!. better check the LCD screen... "Arghhhh...there's a reflection", the light is on, and reflectingt into the darkening exterior - Never mind, take a few more shots, closer to the window, and shield the lens from the reflecting light. OK quickly now...can't be more than a minute left". Supergran peers through the viewfinder..."What's that!!!" she screams, it's a red rectangle blinking in the view finder and the camera doesn't turn on - oh no! it's the @@#$&! battery warning signal. Keep trying - wait a second, try again...No dammit, no good"
Supergran was about to give up,, but no...off to the office again to quickly search for some re-charged batteries. Quickly, quickly...CRASH!! "What's that?" - one of the batteries had dropped from her fumbling fingers and is rolling on the floor trying to hide under the filing cabinet. In a flash Supergran bends down to pick it up. Getting up again took a lot longer...but she made it. Back to the front window....how is the sun...Ok still there... Never mind the window. Go out of the front door no time for coat, it's only -6 degrees, and you won't freeze if you are quick. Opening the door she stepped out onto the icy porch...darn it, couldn't see the sun from here...back inside, quickly, quickly she has surely missed it by now.
Supergran hurries to the front window once again...this time she pauses slightly to pull up the blind. Once up, and camera powered on. Click..click.. several more shots at the glowing sun and it's reflection on the icy snow. Satisfied, she retreats a few paces, relaxes and takes in the beautiful sights of nature happening in front of her. Suddenly her razor sharp brain is thinking..... "Hmmmm..really strange, I have had enough time to do all those things and the sun has still not set" "It doesn't even seem to have changed it's position at all"
The sky is, by now, quite dark and as Supergran peers at the scene, she realizes that the lovely 'sun' that she was so avidly photographing was, in fact, a STREET LIGHT! Well there is SOME excuse for this mistake as this particular street light has a mind of it's own, and most of the winter it does not light up with the other street lights, it only works when it feels like it, and tonight was one of those nights....Supergran is considering changing her name to Stupidgran!

Evening in purple

The purple effect was got when shooting, changing white balance to fluorescent light.

Smooth water,sun rising silently,and the shadowy silhouttes of old sailboats on a cold clear autumn morning at the hythe quay in Maldon....in this image I have tried to capture the moment of sublime peace I find in the utter quiet stillness offered by this place at this time of day and season. The sails and sparspoint the way to the great beyond. Look.....and enjoy the silence.
